My Icon pick of the week – 1

This was posted in General, Inspiration on April 26th, 2010

Icons are great for adding meaning to any desktop application or web application.

The web is full of icon sets that can be beautiful and inspirational. Developers and designers often find themselves spending hours looking for the best icons suited for whatever projects they are working on. You will find many design orientated sites that offer compilation lists of icons sets.

Those lists are fine, but most of the time they are just generic lists and you are not always going to find the right icon to suit your own style (a good designer should be able to diversify; however we all have our own unique styles that usually come out in any design we do).

New site template

This was posted in Development, General on April 22nd, 2010

The standards for developing web sites are constantly changing. Cast your minds back to when you had to develop sites using nested tables *shiver* – with some exceptions (curse you Sharepoint 2007) , I’m glad I don’t need to use nested tables in my site designs anymore.

Now  pure CSS designs are all the rage. In accordance with changing standards, and also to keep my skills fresh, I have once again updated my Wordpress template. The design is “mostly” finished; however me being me, no doubt I will tweak it further over the coming months. I am happy as it is though, otherwise I would not have made it live.

Word ‘07 shows final with mark-up

This was posted in General, Software on September 8th, 2009

At work we use Office 2007 and the one thing that really bugged me was that a word document would open up showing the markup text and symbols. You can change this setting by going to the ‘Review’ tab on the Ribbon and selecting how you want the document to display under ‘Tracking’

If you just want to see the Final version of a Word 2007 document without the mark-up then do the following:

Office Button > Word Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings >
Privacy Options > Document specific settings

Deselect ‘Make hidden mark-up visible when opening or saving’.

When you next open up a word document you shouldn’t see all the markup.

Edit – seems this didn’t work after all! Darn Microsoft Word 2007… Anyone have any ideas?

The Garden Project

This was posted in General on June 23rd, 2009

Since we moved into our new house, our gardens been ovegrown and difficult to manage. I’ve started to tackle it and am hoping to have the garden complete in a few months.

The gallery will show the projects progress as I remove more and more unwanted plants and weeds.

[album id=2 template=extend]

The aim of the project is to create a visually appealing garden that is suitable for children – on a budget. Unfortunately no expensive Japanese bonsai tree rock gardens for me :-)

New plants added so far:

  • Calluna vulgaris - Heather
  • Fuchsia Magellanica
  • Arundinaria Murielae – Bamboo
  • Lavandula Stoechas - French Lavender
  • Buddleja
  • Potentilla Abbotswood (white flower)

Plants damaged by Ethan my 21 month old son: 2 3

Plants I would like to include in the garden:

  • Acer Japanese Maple

Alderhay Hospital and Ronald McDonald House

This was posted in General on June 7th, 2009

I’ve just become a parent again for the second time. Unfortunately my second boy, Matthew, was born about a month early and with a problem with his heart. Luckily due to him being a premature baby they noticed the heart problem and sent him to Alderhay Hospital for surgery. The surgens there were fantastic and fixed my sons heart. I’m glad to say that he is doing well and is looking healthy. A big thank you also goes out to the Nurses who looked after our boy; especially during his initial recovery period in Alderhays ICU.

ronald_mcdonaldI would also like to mention the wonderful charity that runs the Ronald McDonald House at Alderhay. Without them we would not have been able to be by Matthew everyday and have somewhere to stay. If you are wondering what Charity to donate to – I would recommend that you donate the the Ronald McDonald House. Many Parents, like us, would struggle to come up with money for accomodation for a week, yet alone the months some parents need to be there for.

Keep yourself looking smart

In today’s economical climate it is difficult to find a new job or even move up in your current position. One thing that will no doubt help is keeping a smart and respectable appearance – fit for the workplace. Keeping smart for work isn’t necessarily going to land you a promotion by itself, but it will give you a professional edge that will complement all that hard work and graft in you job.

Shaving is an age old ritual that most men can, unfortunately, get wrong. How many many must walk around today not realising that they have terrible shaves, suffering from razor burn and redness?
Shaving is perhaps seen as a chore that needs to be done quickly in the morning before rushing of to work. I say this because I was once one of those who rushed shaving, which almost always resulted in a shave that was not very tidy, or in shaving cuts.

Getting Things Done

This was posted in General, Software on May 24th, 2009

clock“Getting Things Done” or “GTD”, according to Wikipedia, is a action management methodology thought up by David Allen. The core principles are:

  1. Collect. Gathering and storing “information”.
  2. Process. Review collected information, i.e. in an email inbox.
  3. Organise. Assign labels to the “information”, i.e. follow-up, hold.
  4. Review. Check tasks and reminders daily to keep on track.
  5. Do. Organisation should not take much time; mostly you should be working on tasks.

New Site

This was posted in General on May 22nd, 2009

Due to problems with my old web host – I’ve moved to a different hosting company and have created a new template. I’m tweaking the design at them moment (and having lots of fun doing it!).

Unfortunately IE6 isn’t playing nice :-( – means I have to do everything twice! If you want to see the site in a proper web browser; use Firefox!!!

Tested browsers: firefox, chrome, IE8
